1/16/2024 0 Comments M50 gas mask vs m40That way you can outfit a group rather than just yourself. So another option is to just buy a bunch of the less expensive 3M masks and a large number of filters for small dust particles, chemicals, paint, etc. A $500-600 mask is great for one person.but if you plan to include family or friends, will they have a mask too? Will you buy them one, or will they buy their own? Suddenly things get more complicated. You also need to consider the exact role this will fill. Drinking water is really important whenever exertion is involved. The FM50 is a wonderful mask, particularly since it contains a drinking straw, wide field of view and various accessories. the M40 and MCU use the standard NATO 40mm thread and the filters are everywhere. so getting extra filters is more difficult. A word of caution on the M50, they use a new filter design, which no other mask uses (to my knowledge). just be sure the fit is proper and the mask is not all beat up. For most realistic civilian purposes, you don't need new production, top of the line stuff. The MCU and M40 can usually be had for under $100 and the Millennium for not much more. and I personally prefer the MSA Millennium -or the Navy/Air Force version, the MCU 2/P that design (with the large single lens) is far more user friendly and is very light. As for the mask, the older (not much older) M40 is good. For what you are talking -radioactive fallout- all you will need is a standard (CS/CN) HEPA type filter, as it is the particles you are worried about, not fumes, etc. I'll start by saying that I have no personal experience with the M50 (after my time), but I do know for certain that there are masks out there that will do the same job for far less $$.
